A Mascot Born from Sarajevo's Mountains
In 1984, the world turned its eyes to Sarajevo for the XIV Winter Olympic Games — the first Winter Olympics ever held in a socialist country, and one of the most beloved Games in Olympic history. At the heart of it all was a little wolf named Vučko.
Designed by Jože Trobec, a Slovenian illustrator, Vučko was selected through a public competition that drew over 800 entries from across Yugoslavia.
The wolf — a symbol of the wild Dinaric Alps — was chosen to represent the spirit of the Games: fierce, free, and full of warmth. With his wide eyes, cheerful grin, and distinctive red scarf, Vučko became one of the most iconic Olympic mascots of all time.
The Man Behind the Wolf: Jože Trobec
Jože Trobec is the original illustrator and author of Vučko. His artistic vision gave life to a character that transcended sport — Vučko appeared on everything from official posters and merchandise to postage stamps and television broadcasts, becoming a cultural symbol of an era.

Trobec's work is rooted in a deep understanding of character, warmth, and storytelling through illustration. His style — playful yet precise — made Vučko instantly recognizable and endlessly lovable.
Decades later, his creation continues to evoke powerful nostalgia for the 1984 Games and the spirit of a united Yugoslavia.
